This project-oriented thesis represents the process of a pilot project that was carried out by two social services students in May 2018. It was implemented in collaboration with Nicehearts in Vantaa and targeted at young mothers and their children. An open one-day event was organized in order to find out if there is a need to realize it in a larger scale in the future. The event consisted of diverse and entertaining activities aimed at supporting the mother’s well-being, along with the relationship between mother and child. Two young mothers and one child attended.

The report provides background information on the topic of young motherhood, highlighting the difficulties that the target group often undergoes. Furthermore, addressing the importance of mother-child interaction. Gender-sensitive and participatory approaches were utilized as methods in some of the phases leading to the execution of the project. In the process description, one can view the planning, implementation and evaluation. A reflection on the outcomes provides insight into the results and on the improvements that should be considered for future projects.

It can be concluded that, based on the results of this pilot project and other research from the field, these kinds of events are needed. Moreover, the activities appear to have had a positive impact on the well-being of the participants and on the relationship with the child. Overall, the intention of this thesis is to provide information for social services professionals and students about the process and challenges of arranging an event for young mothers and their children. Additionally, it could be used as a base for other projects with a similar purpose and for the same or a different target group.
