The thesis has been done in co-operation with Association of cancer patients in Fin-land. The purpose was to collect development propositions from the members of or-ganisation´s Facebook-based peer support groups. The aim of the thesis was to offer Association of cancer patients in Finland up-to-date and member-oriented develop-ment propositions, opinions and feedback concerning the peer groups. There has been discussion in the groups concerning the possibility of arranging the groups individually for cancer patients and their next of kins. At the moment the peer groups on Facebook are meant for both social groups. Our aim was to gather opinions and arguments on this possibility as well.
The goal of the thesis was to navigate the hopes and the opinions of the users consid-ering the peer support groups. On top of that the aim was to find out users’ opinions considering the possibility to separate the peer support groups between the cancer pa-tients and the next of kins. The thesis was implemented by an electronic survey on Google Forms. The questionnaire included both quantitative questions and possibili-ties to elaborate answers freely. The questionnaire was shared in the peer support groups by the representative of the organisation in the fall 2018. The survey was open for six weeks.
140 members of the peer support groups answered the survey. Most of the answerers visited the groups daily. the groups were mainly used for receiving peer support as a cancer patient and searching information. Over 80 % of the answerers were very or quite satisfied with the groups. There were still a lot of development ideas. Most of the development ideas described the need for professional services and up-to-date and trustworthy information. The peer support groups were also hoped to be more active and the admins to take more part in the conversations.
One third of the answerers found it necessary that the groups would be divided between patients and next of kins, while 40 % did not see this essential. Rest of the answerers didn´t speak out on this matter. There were lot of arguments for and against the matter. Most of them had to do with as well as the patients´ and the next of kins´s needs for support, possibilities to open conversation and confidentiality.
Key words: cancer, patient network, peer support, next of kin
