The purpose of this thesis was to find out about the use of experiential knowledge in non-institutional mental health care and associations of mental health in Oulu area, Finland. By using interviews, it was found out how experiential knowledge has been utilized, and what it takes to instil experiential knowledge as a persistent part of the services. With using interviews, the aim was to gather information that Effective expert by experience in Northern Ostrobothnia project needs and generally increase knowledge of the use of experiential knowledge.
The research method of this thesis was a focused interview. Interviews were made in the spring of 2020. The research questions were: How experiential knowledge could be used more widely in Oulu area and how to develop the use of experiential knowledge so that the use of it would be a persistent part of different services.
The research partner of this thesis was the project Effective expert by experience in Northern Ostrobothnia. The project is coordinated by the registered association of Northern Ostrobothnia’s social and health safety. According to the interviews it was found out that experiential knowledge could be used more widely in Oulu area in developing co-production with professionals in different organisations, in health centres, as a peer work reception, in secondary education institutions, for example in general upper secondary school's psychology lessons and in different student welfare groups. The use of experiential knowledge could be developed so that it would be more persistent part of different services by reserving enough resources (time and money) to use experiential knowledge, to add knowledge and understanding of professionals and by sharing experiential knowledge.
In further studies we would try to find out how co-production works between person who shares experiential knowledge and professional, what concrete use does it have and what other information other than mentioned in our research, it takes to maintain a working co-operation.
