The voluntary and involuntary migration of people worldwide due to social, economic, and political factors have forced people to integrate into societies they find themselves in. In Finland, Nigerian immigrants have increased significantly over the last decade. Currently, there is limited research on the experiences of these immigrants in the process of integrating into Finnish society. This first study on the topic sought to explore it and determine the impact of the experiences on the migrants and their families.
Using the qualitative research approach, we interviewed 13 participants, including students, and working Nigerian immigrants in Finland. Relevant and related data were collected and analysed using thematic analysis. Among the key findings include both positive and negative experiences, including language barrier, immigration bureaucracy, discrimination, and free access to education and healthcare services. The main impacts of these experiences include unemployment, isolation/mental health, lack of trust, and a narrow pathway to citizenship.
However, it is important to note that the study was limited by the number of research participants (13 participants), sampling method, and time constraints, limiting data collection time. There is a need for future research to consider larger sample size and use a more appropriate sampling method.
Key concepts: Migration, Immigration, Integration, Integration intervention.
