Asiasanat: Naisvangit, Vankilan perheosasto, Varhainen vuorovaikutus This thesis is research oriented, and its aim was to study the experiences of female prisoners and their children after they have left the Vanaja prison family unit. Supporting parenthood and returning to civilian life were also key topics in this research. The aim of the thesis was to produce information about these experiences for the employees of the Vanaja prisons family unit, to develop the service in a customer-oriented manner. The goal was also to raise awareness about female prisoners and their children as well as the family unit and to increase research information about it.
The research questions were: how did the customers experience the family unit period, how is parenting supported in the family unit and how is the return to civilian life supported in the family unit?
The study carried out interviews from mothers who have left the family unit. Narrative interview was used as the interview method. The interviews were semi-structured, and everyone was asked the same questions. The pre-planned interview framework was divided separately into questions related to the mother and the child. The interviews were conducted in the beginning of 2022 and a total of five of them took place. Content analysis was used as the data analysis method.
Based on the analysis of the data, the experiences of the customers with the family unit are mostly positive. The physical, psychological, and social environment of the family unit creates a safe atmosphere for families and enables them to focus on parenting and early interaction. The mothers felt that they received individual support and useful advice that supported their parenting skills. Predictable everyday life, as well as repetitive rhythms and routines, were felt to be important as something that supports both parenting and the child's growth and development. The routines also laid the groundwork for returning to civilian life and everyday life at home.
Conclusions emphasize observation. A small child's voice comes to be heard specifically by observing the child and the interaction between the child and the parent in everyday situations. It is also important for the parent to learn to observe the child and the child's needs. Observing the family and identifying challenging backgrounds also enables providing individual support and help to the parent and child.
