Being a part of the acquisition and delivery process of a newbuild cruise ship is an interesting task in the career of a seafarer. Participation of the author in the newbuilding series of three expedition cruise ships was the main motivator to write this thesis. Working in the capacity of the captain is strikingly different at the shipyard compared to the daily routines carried out in the normal operations. The shipyard period requires a lot of understanding in the building process which is not studied in the maritime school, and availability of the written material is poor as well. The aim of this thesis was to bring further understanding of the acquisition process and commissioning of the newbuild cruise ships into service for the future captains, crew members and all other people interested in the topic.
Reference materials of this study were the relevant literature, online articles and eight interviews. It was obvious from a very early stage that there was not enough written material available and interview topics were selected after the literature review to complete the gaps in the references. Eight interviews were carried out with the specialists in the top managerial roles in their respective fields which can be found in the list of appendices. These interviews gave credibility to the thesis as well as provided a good supplement to the existing knowledge. All the materials referenced were analyzed by the author whose own personal experiences filled in the gaps to provide a structure with solid foundation for this research.
This thesis was selected to be an interdisciplinary research where the relevant topics were studied to support the research question as defined. Due to the fact that the scope of the study was enormous, a careful evaluation was held to narrow the topic to a reasonable scale. The entire process was transformed into a service blueprint from the ship owner’s perspective. This was a natural selection and presented the point of view which was the most useful for the ship owners, captains, and officers.
