Tiivistelmä
In response to the growing attention on Industry 4.0 and Circular Economy within both academic and industrial communities, this thesis seeks to contribute to the ongoing discourse and debate by exploring the impact of prominent Industry 4.0 technologies, specifically Additive Manufacturing technologies, in the context of manufacturing. The thesis is conducted from the perspective of an R&D lab within the Finnish higher education sector, probing its endeavors within the boating industry as part of a broader shift towards embracing the principles of a Circular Economy. After a critical review of the extant literature on Additive Manufacturing technologies and Circular Economy, empirical research was carried out by utilizing qualitative research methods and employing a case study research strategy. Primary data was gathered through interviews, complemented by secondary data from various sources for a thorough analysis. Through thematic analysis, the research findings reveal the positive influence of Additive Manufacturing technologies on Circular Economy, spanning aspects such as product and production, environmental considerations, financial implications, and social dimensions. Aligning with the insights obtained from existing literature, the thesis concludes with in-depth discussions of the research findings as well as offers practical implications and recommendations to manufacturers interested in Additive Manufacturing technologies, accompanied by proposed avenues for future research.
