The aim of this research study was to find out about the constraints of the immigrant women in the public swimming places and the reasons behind their lack of motivations. Furthermore, to seek practical ways to manage those constraints hindering active participation. Qualitative research method was used, the data was collected through a semi-structured online interview with four immigrant women who were clients of Monaliiku ry Helsinki. We wanted to explore how the participants experienced a similar event.
Purposive sampling refers to an intentional selection of participants based on their characteristics, knowledge, experiences, or some other criteria. This sampling method was chosen to allow freedom of in-depth analysis due to its nature while thematic analysis steps were taken to reach the result; both methods were chosen as most suitable for our research work. Research results found that the constraints were based on themes such as Cultural and Social Constraints, Access and Availability Constraints, and Personal Constraints. They could hinder motivation to active participation in physical activities in general, not only in swimming. These constraints may consist of no knowledge of available opportunities nor services offered to immigrant women in swimming activities.
Keywords: Immigrant women, Culture, Physical activities, Swimming, Integration, Constraints.
