Perspectives of a Finnish crew on AI integration onboard vessels : Attitudes and expectations from crew of seafarers towards AI Integration into shipboard systems

Abstract

This thesis investigates the attitudes and expectations of seafarers regarding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into shipboard systems, providing insights into the perceived benefits, challenges, and concerns associated with AI technologies in the maritime industry. Using a questionnaire for maritime crew members, we explore a range of responses that reveal both optimism and caution toward AI integration. A majority of participants believe that AI holds potential to enhance safety and efficiency, particularly in tasks such as navigation support, predictive maintenance, and cargo planning. However, skepticism remains frequent, with many crew members expressing concerns about job security, the reliability of AI in complex environments, and the risk of over-reliance on automation. There is a strong like-mindedness that AI should act as a supportive tool rather than replace human roles entirely, emphasizing the need for human oversight to ensure safety and effective operations. These findings suggest that while there is openness to AI advancements, successful integration will require careful consideration of seafarers’ perspectives, training, and clear guidelines to balance technological innovation with the expertise and adaptability that human crew members bring to shipboard operations.
