The aim of this Thesis was to investigate the perceptions of Non-Native Finnish workers in Rinnekodit OY on the rights of Persons with disabilities (PWDs), specifically regarding the concepts of self-determination and participation.

The research objective was to explore the experiences, barriers, and possibilities faced by these workers in promoting disability rights in their daily work. Further, the research endeavoured to identify the challenges faced in a multicultural setting and explore ways to enhance workers' capacity to advocate for the rights of people with disabilities (PWDs).

The research methodology was qualitative in order to provide in-depth insight into non-native Finnish workers' experiences in disability service units’ context. Data was collected through an online questionnaire via Webropol Survey to extract comprehensive information concerning the perceptions and experiences of participants. A total of 29 staff members from different Rinnekodit Disability service units responded to the survey. Data was analysed through a thematic analysis to identify significant thematic areas from the closed and open-ended responses, enabling a more detailed data assessment.

Overall, results highlight the importance of recognizing and responding to the specific challenges encountered by non-native Finnish-speaking employees when promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in the context of Disability Service Units. It highlights core perceptions and experiences from which targeted capacity-building interventions may be developed to result in better serving and advocating for PWDs. This study will contribute to furthering the ongoing discussion on disability rights and improving the best practices for implementation in a multicultural context and society.
