Reimagined scenarios: an Escape Game on Consent & Boundaries for Sexual Violence Prevention

This development-oriented thesis aims to empower youth to navigate social and sexual contexts through raising their awareness and confidence to make better informed decisions in their own interactions. It is no debate that youth is a critical period to address these topics, as individuals in this stage often lack experience and understanding of their personal boundaries. Young adults are therefore particularly vulnerable to internalizing gender stereotypes and conforming to harmful societal norms, particularly those that are harmful to themselves and others.
The method to increase their awareness on consent and setting personal boundaries is to create an engaging escape game for youth aged 15-29 years by collaborating with Amnesty International Finland. The game would take the participants on a journey of dating that exposes four common phases: their initial meeting, their distant conversations, their official date, and their intimate encounter. The game elements were successfully completed by 24 February 2025 and evaluated by 17 March 2025. The evaluation plan had to be modified from its original course, where two experts gave their insight on the elements, instead of one and a youth focus group. Not testing it with a youth focus group poses a problem on whether the game meets its objective of being relevant and representative of youth. It is suggested that effective tools for working with youth should account for their opinions and considers their voices. While the version of the game in this thesis does not include them, it is hoped that it will be developed soon after more test runs with youth groups.
The process of creating the game revealed how much work there remains to be done in the field of consent and personal boundaries. While the game is extensive, it was observed that there are many areas that need to be further explained and studied. Further work is needed to address the intersectionality of youth's sexual experiences, and additional trial runs should be conducted to better understand their preferences for game elements.
