This research study was carried out in rural population of Nyang’oma sub-location of Bondo Division in Siaya County-Kenya. The study aims to provide relevant insights into how the boda-boda transport service has impacted the socioeconomic status of rural Bondo. The research investigates the phenomenon in its natural environment exploring its meaning and benefits to the rural population. Particular attention is paid to age, gender, education, income, household and community.
The paper discusses unemployment, poverty and poverty alleviation strategies in Kenya and transport sector as background study for the research. The paper goes on to describe its impacts at individual, household and community levels with emphasis to economic and social changes. It also examines and describes how it has changed the rural context in relation to income diversification, information flow, rural-urban access and development.
This paper presents data material analyzed through thematic method, collected from boda-boda operators, service users, boda-boda associations and the local government administration. The paper attempts to demonstrate how the service has cushioned the rural poor against acute poverty and given them an opportunity to better their lives from the income generated by the business.
The findings of this study confirms that the socioeconomic status of rural Bondo has improved. That the boda-boda has impacted the economic and social conditions of the community positively. It has also highlighted the negative effects of the business on the rural population.
