Tiivistelmä
This thesis explores the systemic, individual, institutional and societal challenges in access to mental healthcare services that people with Intellectual Disabilities are facing. Despite the existing policies intentions, it is evident that there are a lot of gaps in actual practice. Availability and utilization of specialized mental health services is insufficient.
A qualitative research approach was utilized, involving a comprehensive literature review and analysis of existing policies and frameworks. Key sources included studies, academic literature, peer reports and national reports. The research question is “What are the challenges preventing access to mental health services for People with intellectual disabilities according to academic literature?”. The focus is on European context highlighting the Finnish point of view.
The key barriers that were identified were systemic gaps and inflexibility, economic constraints, stigma, diagnostic overshadowing and limitations in the workforce. There is an urgent need for improvements in service design and delivery, to avoid delayed and non-existent mental health service practices. A lack of cohesion about the methods, frameworks and eligibilities between the service providers creates challenges to access.
The Aim of this thesis is to reduce stigma and contribute to the development of more equitable and effective mental health services for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
