Tiivistelmä
This thesis explores how structured communication tools can support social and emotional learning (SEL) among young basketball players. The project, commissioned by Leppävaaran Pyrintö ry (LePy), introduces a practical communication card designed to help players improve emotional regulation, verbal clarity, and supportive interaction on the court. Grounded in SEL and Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, the study applies a two-week intervention with four U12 players. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and reflection tools.
Findings show small, short-term improvements in players’ use of names and encouragement, indicating increased awareness of communication habits. However, deeper skills such as emotional regulation, calmness under pressure, and communication with referees showed limited progress. The results suggest that meaningful growth in communication and SEL requires longer, more structured interventions with consistent reflection and coaching support.
The study provides insights for youth coaches on integrating communication and SEL principles into everyday basketball training.
