Asiasanat: varhaiskasvatus, kielen kehitys, kaksikielisyys, suomi toisena kielenä -opetus
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to plan and execute activity-based sessions for multicultural children. The primary objective was to support the children who are learning the Finnish language. The goal was to increase their speaking confidence with Finnish through activities as well as to develop a board game together with the children. The study was carried out in partnership with a day care unit in Vantaa in the Spring of 2019. This is a functional thesis in which both qualitative data collection and evaluation methods were used. The functional part of the study consisted of nine sessions over the span of three weeks in which the data was collected through observation. Eight children between the age of five and six participated in the sessions all of whom had various levels of Finnish. The overall theme of the sessions was based around the idea of emotions.
In the theoretical framework, the concepts relevant are the Finnish early childhood education, language and language development, bilingualism, Finnish as a second language education and pedagogical methods suitable for learning Finnish. The theme of our sessions, emotions, will also be covered. The information used in the study was obtained from both printed sources and electronic sources alike
The research evaluation tools for our paper were SWOT-analysis, a learning diary, observations, self-assessment and feedback from the children and the day care staff. From testing, it was shown that in a period of three weeks the methods discussed in this paper increased the children’s vocabulary and confidence. Overall, using functional and innovative methods to teach Finnish as a second language to children will reward not only the children but also the Finnish society as a whole through increased immigration this will only be further in demand.
