Tiivistelmä
This bachelor’s thesis study was carried out as part of the collaborative project between Laurea and Kolmiosairaala. The vision of Kolmiosairaala is based on supporting the client’s active participation in his or her own care, changing leadership, the flexibility of the environment and the safe combination of services in the future hospital.

The topic for the thesis was chosen through an interest in promoting an ideal nursing environment for the new hospital considering client-centred care. The purpose of the study was to describe nurses’ experiences of an ideal nursing environment in Kolmiosairaala based on client-centred care. The study is based on nurses’ experiences describing what an ideal environment will be like in Kolmiosairaala. The ideal nursing working environment is emphasized as an important phenomenon of nursing science. The focus of nursing care is on client-centred care.

The data was collected during February and March 2008 from the seven HUS polyclinics joining Kolmiosairaala. These polyclinics are: haematology, lung diseases, cardiology, nephrology, rheumatic diseases, infectious diseases, and general internal medicine. A request for fourteen informants was made from which the reply rate was slightly over 50%, with a total of eight replies. For the study a qualitative design approach was used. Inductive analysis allowed for the data collected in the form of narratives to be described and conceptualized into thematic areas. General themes were constructed based on specific data from the findings. By reviewing and interpreting the narratives several thematic areas were discovered. One of the most common themes was adequate environment, followed by assuring quality care, optimal environment, client-centred care, access to information, services and professionals and sufficient resources. Issues of ethicality and trustworthiness were taken into consideration throughout the entire study process, according to Laurea University of Applied Sciences thesis guidelines and HUS ethical guidelines.

The conclusion drawn from the findings showed the registered nurses were not concentrating on the whole aspect of the environment but only on the physical one. Environment, and all the elements contained within it, is an important nursing concept which needs to be actualized and improved so that better nursing care can be provided for the clients’ and the nurses can work in optimal conditions which will promote quality care. One possible way to bring about this future change is through further professional development which should be founded in evidence-based care.
