Suomi on maailman metsistään riippuvaisin maa, ja metsiä käytetään paljon eri tarkoituksiin. Metsätaloudella ja metsäteollisuudella on suuri rooli Suomessa. Jotta metsistä saatava materiaali säilyttäisi laatunsa ja metsät pysyisivät tuottavina, niitä on alettu sertifioida. Suomessa käytetään kahta sertifiointiohjelmaa, PEFC:tä ja FSC:tä, joiden kriteerit kohtaavat osin, mutta poikkeavat jonkin verran toisistaan. Tämän tutkimuksen aiheena on näiden kahden metsäsertifikaatin vertailu. Tavoitteena on selvittää, voiko kriteereiden perusteella väittää toista paremmaksi.

Tutkimus on toteutettu itsenäisesti lukemalla aiheeseen liittyviä internetsivustoja, julkaisuja ja kirjallisuutta sekä sähköpostitse toteutetulla haastattelulla asiantuntijoille, jotka edustavat eri näkökantoja sertifikaatteihin. Kysely lähetettiin teollisuuden, etujärjestöjen ja puolueettomien tahojen edustajille.

Kriteerien vertailun tuloksena tuli johtopäätös, että FSC on hieman PEFC:tä parempi, sillä siitä jää vakuuttavampi mielikuva. FSC keskittyy enemmän ympäristöasioihin, PEFC tuntuu välillä panostavan enemmän lakien ja säädöksien täyttämiseen. FSC:n kriteerit ovat myös yksityiskohtaisemmat. Molemmat sertifiointiohjelmat koetaan kuitenkin tarpeellisiksi ja hyödyllisiksi ilmastonmuutoksen hillitsemisessä, sillä ne molemmat vastustavat metsäkatoa ja auttavat siten säilyttämään metsät hiilinieluina.

Finland is the most forest dependent country in the world and there are many different purposes forests are used for. Forestry and forest industry play a huge role in Finland. To keep the quality of the forest based material and the productivity of the forests as good as possible, some forest certification systems have been established. There are two forest certification systems used in Finland; PEFC and FSC. Their criteria are partly similar, but there are some parts where they differ from each other. The subject of this Bachelor’s Thesis is the comparison of these two forest certificates used in Finland. The objective is to decide whether you can say which one is better.

This Bachelor’s Thesis is an independent research. It has been made by using the in-formation in Internet, publications and literature available and an interview by e-mail. The interview was sent to people who represent different sides of forest certification; people who stand for the forest certification, people who may be against it and people with no opinion against it.

The result was that FSC is a bit better than PEFC, because it gives a stronger and more efficient image. FSC is more detailed with its criteria. Both of them stand for using lo-cal labour, though it hasn’t been written in PEFC criteria. Still both of them are very useful: they fight against the deforestation and help the wellbeing of the forests.
