Kiinnostusta verkossa tapahtuviin omaisille suunnattuihin vertaistukiryhmiin on palautteen perusteella. Lisätuen tarvetta kuitenkin on, koska osa osallistujista toivoi syvällisempää pureutumista teemoihin.
Nowadays digital peer groups offer more possibilities to get support online anonymously, in-dependent of time and place. Utilising digitality as a part of advancing the mental health should be considered even more in Finland nationwide.
This practice-based thesis was made with FinFami Uusimaa ry, as a cooperation partner and as a commissioner. FinFami ry aims to develop relative operations with the help of a project called VETO, which is planned to operate for three years. It is the first, and for now the only, project that operates online focusing on the relative operations and on the digitalisation of organisations. On the background of the project, thanks to digitalisation, is the need to create new ways of supporting the relatives, and utilise new ways of supporting their wellbeing, consciousness and empowerment.
The purpose of the thesis was to survey the needs and wishes of relatives who have a significant other suffering from a mental illness, based on the literature of the subject, and to plan different themes basing on them to be used in the renewed peer support group on Tukinet.
The aim of the thesis was to create a functional content/model for digital peer support activity based on the needs and wishes of the relatives, as well as evaluate the success of the practical part and the pilot group.
In the center of the peer support group were adults who are over 18-year-old and who have lived in a family where a parent has suffered from a mental illness.
The practical part of the thesis was implemented in Hämeenlinna in the Spring of 2019. The most central content during the day was to collect ideas and thoughts regarding to the themes the writers of the thesis had come up with for the pilot group. Five of these themes were chosen for the final use by FinFami ry.
After the pilot group had concluded a poll on the success of the activity and of the themes was sent to the workers as well as to the relatives who had taken part in the group.
The results of this work regarding to the final themes of the chats revealed that digital peer support groups operating online are needed. There were not many participants in the group, but important information and feedback was received of the themes and of the activity. Based on the feedback, there is interest in peer support groups operating online for the relatives. However, there is more need for support because some of the participants were hoping for a deeper handling of the themes.
In the future the visibility as well as the availability of the peer support groups should be developed even further in Finland for those who would benefit from easily accessible and low-threshold peer support.
The cooperation partner of the thesis will get current information on how to develop a functioning working model for the workers as well as for the relatives on a nationwide level. Also, information about the needs and desires of the relatives are considered.
