Finnish Current Care Guidelines were updated in the terms of resuscitation training in 2016. New recommendations states that every pupil starting from twelve years old should be taught resuscitation, and the using of defibrillator. The resuscitation training should be part of primary schools’ curriculum, and it should be arranged at least for two hours a year.
The thesis was executed as functional research. The purpose of the thesis was to create a resuscitation training material for primary school teachers. With the training material, teachers can teach resuscitation and the using of defibrillator for their pupils. With well structured, clear and simplified training material, the training session does not require too much planning, so it makes the teachers’ job easier.
The training material consists of a 30-minute PowerPoint presentation which includes the necessary theory to understand the resuscitation training, and 60 minutes of practical training.
Material for the thesis was gathered from subject-related literature, teaching materials and Internet resources. The training material was tested in collaboration with Rantavitikka’s primary school 5th graders. The functionality of the training material was tested after the practice day by exam, and with opinion poll by personal experience of pupils’ feelings. Feedback was also gathered from the teacher of the 5th grade, who was examining the training day.
When examining the results of the exams and polls, it is safe to state that a 5th grader is capable of assuming and understanding theory and practices of the training session which is up to two hours long. The content of the education should be taught considering child’s level of development. The teaching should be brief, explicit and repetitive.
