Tiivistelmä
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate choice of studying abroad of Vietnamese students in Finland. The thesis has a research scope that only focuses on Vietnamese students in Finland and the students are learning at a university of applied sciences level. Particular objectives of the thesis are: (1) to evaluate elements influencing studying abroad of Vietnamese students in Finland; (2) to explore the highest influence element on studying abroad of the Vietnamese students in Finland; and (3) to provide practical recommendations for universities of applied sciences in Finland to attract Vietnamese students.

Based on Finland’s educational context and demands of Vietnamese students, this study investigated five main factors affecting studying abroad of Vietnamese students in Finland and the factors were cultural difference, the host nation’s safety, cost issues, future career prospects and high-quality education system. There were five hypotheses that were proposed. A conceptual model was developed for this thesis.

The study’s research approach was deduction. The study’s method was quantitative method and its research strategy was survey. A questionnaire was utilized to gather data from 150 Vietnamese students of universities of applied sciences in Finland. SPSS software was applied as a data analysis tool to perform different data analysis approaches consisting of frequency analysis, test of reliability based on Cronbach’s Alpha and regression analysis. The survey was conducted from 25 May 2020 to 8 June 2020 and there were 146 participants offering responses to the survey.

The study results show that cultural difference and cost issues had negative effects on studying abroad of Vietnamese students in Finland. However, host nation’s safety, high-quality education system and future career prospects had positive impacts on the studying abroad of the Vietnamese students. Future career prospects were explored as the most important factor affecting the studying abroad of the Vietnamese students.
