Suunnitelmavaiheessa kartoitin toimeksiantajani toiveet perehtyen samalla tutkimustyötäni tukevaan teoriaan.
This thesis is a functional thesis the purpose of which was to plan and implement activities for uneducated, depressed young people to support their weekly program. The commissioner was the Department of Adolescent Psychiatry 5 of Kainuu Social Welfare and health Care Joint Authority (Kainuun Sote), where a need for such a program involving rehabilitation and support activities had emerged. The aim was, using the various activities planned, to support the rehabilitation of this target group and develop their everyday life skills. The research task was to find out what activities supported this target group in the Department of Adolescent Psychiatry.
In the planning phase, the commissioner’s wishes were mapped while researching relevant theories that supported this research. As an initial survey, professionals working with depressed young people (doctors, teachers, nurses and the commissioner) were interviewed. Based on these interviews, a product that would support young peoples' rehabilitation, was complied. The product included a program of activities and a guide making it easier to understand the activities, providing both more information about them and ways to implement them.
During the implementation phase, the program and guide were introduced to the staff in the Department of Adolescent Psychiatry 5, after which the theories were tested in practice. Then necessary changes were made to the program based on the feedback received. During this trial period, the program received good feedback, especially due to the necessity of the product. The activities developed were considered to support the rehabilitation of young people; the activities were also regarded as easy to organize and comprehensive for the needs of the department. After the changes, the final product was re-introduced to the staff at a department meeting.
According to the results of this thesis, it could be meaningful to study the effectiveness of the activities and also to evaluate them from a young person's point of view and see what kind of things would support and facilitate their return to school. Further research could also address the specific effects of absenteeism on young people in a psychiatric ward, and the underlying reasons for it.
