The objective of this thesis was to conceptualise an eco-calculator for an e-business using service design approach. The aim was to examine and identify the ways of making an eco-calculator easily approachable and a desirable feature by the consumers. The eco calculator should both make the eco impact of consumption choices visible and understandable and also captivate new clientele and engage the existing one. The client and most of the empirical part of the thesis is classified and thus not available in the published document.
The theoretical framework of this thesis consists of customer experience, service design, storification ang gamification. These entities were chosen to help discover the methods and tools for conducting the empirical part and to give insight on the different factors when creating a new service from a user-centred point of view. The empirical part was conducted following the principles of service design and thus using both data and method triangulation for a more thorough understanding of the consumers and their desires. Benchmarking, customer journeys, an online survey, storification and prototyping were used to create consumer and market understanding. Co-creational workshops were utilised in the storification and prototyping processes.
The main contribution of this thesis is the gained insights on how to approach a usercentric service creation process. By utilising the service design process and especially the co-creational methods, valuable information on further developing the eco calculator was obtained. The methods put the consumer in the centre of the development and by prototyping the ideas could be validated and flaws recognised. The process taught that one can never really test ideas with consumers too early or too much.
