Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of international nursing students in the clinical environment, identify how language barriers affects clinical learning and possible ways to develop long term plan to support international students during clinical practice.
The following thesis was conducted using the literature review research method. In total 5 articles were deemed relevant to the research topic and were obtained from the following databases provided to students of Laurea University of Applied Sciences: CINAHL, PROQUEST and Laurea FINNA. Critical appraisal of data was performed on all research articles prior to in depth analysis, using the inductive approach of the qualitative content analysis.
The findings of this literature review indicated that the students who did not have strong command of the Finnish languages were affected by the language barrier. The language barrier had effects on students learning outcomes, students felt alone and ignored, and students also found it difficult to create a professional identity among the clinical staffs. In addition to that the literature review also suggested some solutions that students and the mentors believed can help lower the effects of language barriers. Both parties believed there needs to be more Finnish language courses for both students and mentors which focuses more on terms/words/slangs used in Finnish hospitals, at the same time Finnish degree students who in future will become mentors could be prepared by similar courses in English language.
The author recommends that further research and deep analysis is required so that the universities can help their English-speaking students learn Finnish language and create a professional identity in the Finnish society.
