Tiivistelmä
Hand hygiene (HH) is the main infection prevention method in a hospital environment. There are several HH monitoring, and assessment methods known nowadays. Electronic hand hygiene monitoring systems (EHHMSs) belong to the automated HH monitoring method. The potential of their efficiency and informativity level is high, especially for healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) prevention, but there are barriers to the effective use of those products in hospitals.

This thesis aims to analyze EHHMS’s feasibility challenges and suggest feasibility improvement of the system by creating its adoption strategy for a close-to-Finnish hospital environment. The purpose of the feasible EHHMS product is HH compliance improvement by its continuous monitoring, identification of the missed HH events, and feedback provision. The main method of the thesis is a literature review. Also, deductive content analysis is used to process collected data. Based on the included in literature review articles (n=26) the list of EHHMS’s feasibility challenges in a hospital environment (n=19) was synthesized. The adoption strategy is hypothetic. It was combined with multimodal strategy’s recommendations collected from the included studies and suggested solutions for listed challenges. Furthermore, the results of the literature review include important feasibility components of EHHMS in a hospital environment and a description of the main actors in the process of electronic HH monitoring solutions’ adoption.

Increasing feasibility of the EHHMSs in hospitals is possible if effective multi-professional co-operative work is conducted among vendor, hospital, universities, and government. Standardization is an acute need in the process of EHHMS products adoption in healthcare. Nurses’ awareness and attitude towards HH monitoring technology - are drivers of EHHMSs’ feasibility in the field. Possible future implementations of the created adoption strategy can reveal its possible advantages and limitations in real hospital environments.
