The objective of the thesis was a further development of the picking process at Raute Corporations warehouse. Picking tasks at Raute significantly differ from those performed in consumer businesses. That is not only because of the scale of the products but for many other variables that have to be managed case-by-case and may cause stress for the personnel and simultaneous disturbance for multiple workers’ daily routines.
The status of the warehouse and its functions in summer 2020 were used as a starting point for the study. An unstructured observational study was carried out to determine the challenges picking workers face in their work. Brief interviews also were conducted among the workers to find out their visions over the picking process.
During the study, several factors that negatively affect the picking process were identified which cannot be remedied by developing the storage operations alone. These issues have been addressed in the thesis only as side notes because the focus was in developing the functioning of the warehouse and its tools for picking tasks.
In the thesis it was discovered that the foundation for a good picking process mastery has already taken shape during the years of its development. The existing problems can therefore largely be countered by improving consistency in the everyday operations. This can mostly be done by improving employee orientation and developing a written up to date guidance for the picking process.
