This thesis project focuses on studying the sufficiency of target company’s current set of Business Intelligence tools available for operational sales personnel, studying the requirements for Business Intelligence tool to cover the information needs required to enable knowledge based decision making within sales personnel’s daily work and to design and realize a Business Intelligence tool to meet the defined requirements as a proof of concept project.
Design Science Research method is used to create new artefact, Business Intelligence tool. The demand for new artefact is initiated by environment – people and organization. Questionnaire and interviews are conducted to specify the requirement and also to further build up experience based knowledge base, which together with theoretical knowledge base are used to design the artefact. Environment again tests and evaluates the relevance of the design and the feedback gained builds the knowledge base further and finetunes the final design. Environment which initiated the demand for new artefact also confirms its relevance and provides the final acceptance.
The accomplished Business Intelligence tool is designed from user point-of-view, making sure it answers the user needs without being too complex or heavy to use in daily business decisions. The tool is planned to cover the information content of multitude of reports sales personnel is currently receiving through different apps or email. The tool is designed to work as self-service platform which means habit change for users, but which also enables further level of detail, possibility to understand underlying drivers of development and transparency and standardization to KPIs between different country organizations. The thesis project accomplished the project objective and realized a Business Intelligence tool covering defined user needs. The tool will be deployed in four countries for larger scale pilot.
