Tiivistelmä
The African immigrant population is on the rise as it currently makes up about 1% of the Finnish population. As the demand for healthcare workers continues to grow in Finland, many African immigrants now see nursing as a career option because of the availability of employment opportunities after their graduation. However, despite this employment opportunity, some African immigrant nurses are not working to their full potential. Some previous studies showed inadequate language skills, low work abilities, negative experiences encountered during their clinical placement as nursing students, and overall life satisfaction as some of the career challenges facing immigrant nurses in Finland. But no study has been done specifically on African immigrant nurses in Finland.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate and understand why some African immigrant registered nurses (RN) choose to work as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) after they graduate from the University of Applied Sciences (UAS) in Finland. Furthermore, this study aims to propose possible solutions to avoid career hindrance(s) to African immigrant nurses after graduation.

The study used a qualitative research method. Six African immigrant nurses took part using a semi-structured interview. All the participants graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing from universities of applied science in Finland and worked as licensed practical nurses. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data collected.

The findings from this study have shown that it is not easy being an immigrant nurse, especially if you have difficulties communicating in the host country's language. Besides, the results also revealed that relationships with co-workers and too much emphasis on the Finnish language over immigrant nurse clinical competence by the Finnish healthcare system are some of the reasons why some African immigrant RNs work as LPN over RN after their graduation in Finland.

The study went further in recommending more emphasis on learning the Finnish language by African immigrant nurses, accommodation of immigrant nurses by their co-workers, and more emphasis on immigrant nurse clinical competence over the Finnish language by the Finnish healthcare system as some solutions to help these African immigrant nurses work their full potential.
