Tiivistelmä
One of the key issues in gerontological nursing is prevention of falls. Falls have raised a major concern to the health care system due to the outcomes that come from falls which can be serious and may directly or indirectly affect patients. Falls can however be prevented through various interventions. Nurses should have knowledge about how falls can be prevented in homecare as well as in nursing home, this helps to minimize falls incidents which elderly people may have experienced in their everyday life.

The bachelor thesis is aimed at providing a guidebook about fall prevention to the international nursing students who are studying in Finnish language under Gerontological course at LAB University of Applied Sciences. The purpose of this thesis is to prevent falling among the elderly living in a nursing home and who are at home, and to provide more information on how falls affect the elderly.

The authors used evidence-based materials which were collected from different reliable sources, this thesis work was written according to LAB thesis guidelines. The knowledge based included general information on falls prevention: The definition of falls, causes, role of nurses in fall prevention, risk assessment and effects of falls.

Practice-based method was used to conduct this thesis by using PDSA model (Plan, Do, Study and Act) and it was done through the cooperation with LAB University of Applied Sciences. Feedback about the guidebook was gathered through questionnaires via email, from five nursing students. Questionnaire was prepared from the criteria of a good guidebook.

The guidebook information is useful for the students during their studies and later on during their working life in general. The topic chosen is seen as important and essential. This knowledge will not only be beneficial to the students but also to the healthcare system.
