Tutkimukseni aihe on Kotkan sokeritehtaan asuinalueen syntymisen ja sen kehityksen kuvaaminen eri vuosikymmeninä. Tavoite on selvittää alueen laajenemisen vaiheet ja siihen vaikuttaneet taustatekijät. Tavoitteena on myös selvittää, mitkä tekijät ovat vai-kuttaneet alueen huomattavaan supistumiseen ja sen sosiaalisen elämän muuttumiseen. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa käydään läpi asuinalueen rakennuksissa tapahtuneet muutokset eri vuosikymmeninä; mitä rakenteellisia muutoksia asuntojen interiööreissä on tehty ja miten tämä muutostöiden aiheuttama kerroksellisuus näkyy asunnoissa tällä hetkellä. Tutkimustyö pohjautuu Kotkan ja Sokeritehtaan historiaa käsitteleviin kirjoihin sekä alueesta tehtyyn muistelmateokseen. Tärkeässä osassa ovat alueen asukkaiden ryhmä- ja yksittäishaastattelut sekä tietämykseni rakennuksista alueen asukkaana. Selvitystyö tuo esille alueen historiallisen arvon ja kuvastaa alueen sosiaalista merkitystä sen asuk-kaille. Tarkoitus on herättää lukijassa eettistä pohdintaa alueen säilymisestä ja suojelusta tule-vaisuudessa.

My research topic is the residential area of a sugar refinery in the city of Kotka, its es-tablishment and development over the decades. The objective is to find out how the area expands and what kind or different factors help it do so. In addition it is dis-cussed what made the area shrink greatly and how the social life changed over the years. What were the main things that led to the tight commune of the present? This research also tells the buildings of the region and how they changed during the decades. It clears up what kind of structural changes have been made in the interiors of the houses and how these multi layer modifications appear in the housing of today. My research based on the history books of the Sugar Refinery of Kotka and also a memoir book of the area. The interviews of the people who lived there play an im-portant role as well as my own concrete experience as an inhabitant of the area. The analysis brings up the historic and social value and what it means to the residential ar-ea. Purpose is to evoke the reader to start thinking how to keep it in a good condition and how to protect the area in the future.
