The topic of this thesis was the servicing procedures of the mechanical systems of the Katanpää-class mine countermeasures vessels. The purpose of this thesis was also to outline the dry-docking procedures for the vessel class.
Prior to this thesis, the aforesaid vessel class had not had a codified dry-docking procedure. For this reason, supervision of the works has been varied and the maintenance procedures have become tacit knowledge – that is the knowledge is tied to the specific skills of the personnel and is undocumented. Staff rotations and changes within the vessel class increase the changes of errors. The purpose of this thesis was to codify the procedures and supervision guidelines in accordance with the requirements of the equipment manufacturers and the governing body of the vessels.
This thesis was conducted using the constructive research method. The contents of the thesis were based on existing theoretical information and procedures. Existing procedures were modified when the need arose and, in such cases when the author found a more cost-effective approach.
The result of this thesis was the development of a dry-docking and maintenance procedure guide. The most significant finding of this thesis was the discovery that in the past some of the maintenance procedures had been performed contrary to the instructions and requirements of the equipment manufacturers. The usability of the guide will be tested in future dry-docking and will be updated and maintained with potential up-dates from manufacturers and advancements in the best-practices of the field.
