Nasogastric tube insertion was commonly performed in nursing care. Misplacement was one of serious complication. Confirming the correct placement of NGT in stomach and measuring the precise length of internal distance from nose to stomach can avoid misplacement. Nurses was always the performer to carry out this procedure. Therefore, safe practices for the insertion are observed.
The purpose of this study was to determine safe practices for the insertion and observation of the NGT, the aim was to increase the knowledge of nurses about the safe use NGT. This study was a literature review, Integrative review was performed in this study.Thematic analysis was carried out to analyze these articles in this study. 7 articles were summarized and synthesized. Codes and one theme were abstracted from the results of these articles. 7 articles introduced different methods to measure the internal distance and verify the accuracy placement of NGT. One of three articles stated 4 methods to accurate the length of internal distance. Two of three articles described NEX and XEN methods to confirm the distance. The outcomes of accuracy distance were vague. The method of using colorimeter was slightly inaccuracy. Three articles was to verify the placement of NGT. The method of PH less than 5.5 and the aspirate from the NGT was an acceptable method to confirm the placement of NGT. One article was about securement of NGT and described the inadvertent tube lose was reduced by bridle securing the NGT.
After analyzing the 7 articles, three codes were abstracted: verifying the placement of NGT, external measurement for NGT and securement of NGT. One theme was generated through abstracting the codes: strategies for safety practices of NGT. Safe practices of NGT was demonstrated step by step.
