The goal of this Bachelor’s thesis was to design and build a 3D printer which uses the FDM printing method and has a larger printing size compared to the other printers on the market.
The first plans were to design a printer which could print a piece of up to 1000 x 1000 x 500 millimeters, but to achieve this, the size of the printer would have grown so large that it would be difficult to find space for the printer. It was decided to reduce the printing size to 600 x 400 x 500 millimeters. The external di-mensions of the device were 1030 x 740 x 1100 millimeters and the total weight of the device was about 70 kilograms.
A part of the thesis covered the mechanics of the 3D printer and the design of the electronics. The me-chanics of the design included the design of the printer body, as well as its moving parts such as shafts. The design was performed using Autodesk Fusion 360 modeling software. The electronics design of the 3D printer included the design of the printer’s motherboard. The motherboard is used to control all the mov-ing parts of the printer, and control and follow the printing process based on the control code and meas-ured sensor data. The motherboard was designed using the Autodesk Eagle PCB design software.
The result of the thesis were the mechanics of a 3D printer that requires little further development, as well as fully functional electronics. The full functionality of the printer could not be tested, because it was decided to implement the printer’s firmware as a separate project after the thesis. The initial budget of 2 000 euros was exceeded by 850 euros, due to high delivery costs and additional parts which were already replaced during the development process.
The thesis did not have a commissioner, so the 3D printer was designed and built for recreational use.
