Satellite internet and its potentials in the telecommunicating system in Finland : case Starlink Inc.

Abstract

Since its first introduction in the early 20s, the Internet connection has been a new and unfamiliar abstract. However, with its robust application towards life and infrastructures in general, it became a considerable contribution to humans in learning and development. The current internet system remains limited in many areas, primarily through physical connections. This paper's research implied introducing the satellite internet phenomenon and a company that now is operating it – Starlink Inc. to the Finnish telecommunication market. The main targets were to understand whether Finnish consumers were satisfied with the current broadband system and if Finland could become a potential market for Starlink.

The thesis analyses the current Finnish market through PESTEL analysis and the telecommunication industry. The research also went through a case company introduction using SWOT and theory on entry mode by Hollensen. Primary research and key findings were conducted on general customers and through an in-depth interview to answer better research objectives. The outcomes from the research suggested that Finnish customers in Finland are satisfied with current telecom options, and high requirements for internet services. Penetrating the Finnish market demands Starlink to come up with a suitable market entry solution, resulting a high risk, high reward scenario as a service provider.
