Westside Lover : muodon ja visuaalisuuden merkitys vaikuttamisessa ja tunteiden muokkaamisessa

Abstract

Tämä opinnäytetyö tutki miten muodolla ja visuaalisuudella voidaan vaikuttaa siihen, miten ihminen havainnoi ja tulkitsee näkemäänsä, ja millaisia tunnereaktioita tätä kautta voidaan herättää. Aihetta lähestyttiin produktiolla, jossa luotiin ristiriita sisällön ja muodon välille. Opinnäytetyön produktio, Westside Lover, on sarja rakkauskirjeitä, joissa teksteinä on käytetty misogynistisiä lyriikoita Yhdysvaltojen länsirannikon 1990-luvun hip-hop-musiikista. Produktiossa lyriikat yhdistettiin niille temaattiseen vastakohtaan, romanttiseen rakkauteen. Produktioon valittu media, rakkauskirjeet, liittyvät länsimaiseen romanttiseen rakkauskäsitykseen. Muodon ja sisällön vastakkainasettelulla luotiin produktio, joka vastasi työn tavoitteisiin: herättää katsojassa tiedostamaton, eli affektiivinen, tunnereaktio, sekä laajemmin kannustaa työn katsojaa pohtimaan sitä, kuinka graafisella suunnittelulla voidaan vaikuttaa havainnointiin ja ohjata ajattelua. Valmis produktio on kangasnauhalla yhteen sidottu pakka rakkauskirjeitä.

Teoriapohja keskittyi vaikuttamisen psykologiaan, sekä erilaisiin kuvatutkimuksen teorioihin, kuten affekteihin, muodon merkitykseen ja semiotiikkaan. Näiden teorioiden kautta teoriapohja taustoitti sitä, miten ihmisiin vaikutetaan ja miten ympäröivää maailmaa havainnoidaan ja tulkitaan. Opinnäytetyön kirjallinen osa taustoitti myös hip-hopin kulttuuria ja estetiikkaa.

Suunnittelutyössä sovellettiin teoriapohjan esittelemiä ilmiöitä ja teorioita. Suunnittelussa hyödynnettiin myös testausta, jossa testihenkilöt saivat vapaasti kertoa produktion nostattamista tunteista ja mielleyhtymistä. Tehdyn testauksen perusteella voitiin todeta, että työssä onnistuttiin sisällön ja muodon ristiriidalla vaikuttamaan visuaalisen materiaalin havainnointiin ja tulkintaan. Kahden toisistaan eroavan aiheen ja teeman yhdistäminen auttaa luomaan affektiivisia reaktioita ja kannustaa pohtimaan vaikuttamisen eri menetelmiä ja ilmenemismuotoja.

Westside Lover is a series of love letters that include lyrics from 1990s West Coast hip-hop music from the United States. This thesis studied how form and design choices can affect how people observe and interpret things. It also examines how form and design choices can aid in sparking an affective reaction. The form of the selected media aims to create a contradiction between visuality and content to help meet the aims of this thesis. This thesis and its production have two aims. Firstly, it wants to create an affective reaction in the viewer with the contradiction between the form and written content. Secondly, it intends to make the viewer reflect on how graphic design can influence the interpretation and reception of messages.

The theoretical foundation of this thesis examines the psychology of influence, as well as various theories of image analysis, such as affections, the meaning of form and semiotics. Through the discussed phenomena and theories, the theoretical part aims to provide a basis and a broader perspective on how people are influenced and how people perceive and interpret the surrounding world. The written part of this thesis also provides an introduction to hip-hop culture and its aesthetics.

In the process part, the phenomena and theories presented by the theoretical foundation were applied to the design work. The design process was supported by testing to prove that the production met the aims of this thesis. During the testing, the test subjects were asked to freely share the feelings and associations that the product and its form and content raised in them. The finished production is a collection of love letters that are tied together with a fabric ribbon. Based on the test done, the form and visual design choices of the production can influence how the viewers observe visual material and create interpretations of it. Combining two different themes helps to create affective reactions in the viewers and encourages the viewers to reflect on the ways how influencing manifests through graphic design.
