Tiivistelmä
The objective of undertaking in this project was first to understand the technical requirements and work breakdown structures involved in Novell to Windows migration. Second, was to offer a solution to MAT Foundries Europe (MFE) which faced a dilemma to continue running its NDS and Group Wise on infrastructure whose technical support has since been retired or migrate to Modem Windows platform that offers much more benefits such as the latest technologies, savings on license fees, and enhanced security.
The MFE's decisions to migrate to windows platform were, Windows platform offers technical support and innovative applications. Customers will benefit from already proven OS developed for power next generation network infrastructure. Also MFE recognized that migration to a new platform was a complex venture that required comprehensive costbenefit and gap analysis of existing MFE's network infrastructure. Likewise the costbenefits of migrating to Windows Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010 outweighed continued investment in Novell NDS and Group Wise in terms of annual license fees and 4- year hardware refresh.
From technical perspective, engaging in Novell to Windows migration project generated resourceful knowledge in project management such as scheduling of high-level project tasks, timelines, leadership and change management, and offered IT solutions to emerging problem in a large organization such as MAT Foundries Europe.
The migration process was undertaken in phases, migration and deployment planning, implementation (installation, configuration, and pilot testing and training), Novell to Windows migration, and finally decommissioning and knowledge transfer. Successful completion of all the migration requirements and dependencies equipped the target audience with necessary skills and expertise in management and understanding of complex and interdependent processes for an organization's mission critical information flow.
