Education development in Nigeria has gone through many phases and has faced many barriers. The colonial era, the involvement of British, education disparities within the geopolitical zones, the influence of Islam and Christianity followed by the devastating civil war which resulted in the destruction of infrastructure, have all proven to be the major reasons for the set back of education development in Nigeria.
The policies were there but due to external and political influences and frequent changes in leadership of the country, the concerned authorities failed to implement them successfully all over the educational sector of the country. The civil war led to the fail and fall of the economy, to seek greener pastures, several families migrated to other parts of Africa.
This paper aims to highlight the key elements which proved to be the barriers to a progressive educational development m Nigeria, while also putting into consideration the educational structure as practiced by the early occupant of the region, to the colonial era, the impact of the war and finally the educational situation after the war up till present. The policies made within this period would be examined to see how effective they would have been if not for the economic instability as experience over the years.
