Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this final thesis was to identify the factors affecting to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients' treatment adherence. Treatment adherence was defined as an active, intentional and responsible process where patient work to maintain their health in collaboration with health care staff. The goal of the study was to increase nurses' understanding about the CKD patients' experiences living with CKD and its treatments. The knowledge can be used in developing a patient care.

The study was carried out as a literature review. Literature review was justified because of ever-increasing amount of nursing information and demands of evidence-based practice. Literature review is the comprehensive study and interpretation of literature from a particular topic. Research data consisted of 22 research articles. Research method was theory-based content analysis. The theoretical model of treatment adherence was used in this study. The model consists of five factors affecting to treatment adherence: patient, treatment, disease, patient-provider relationship and clinical setting.

Patient related factors affecting to treatment adherence were beliefs, knowledge, learning skills, coping strategies, and support from family members and peers. Treatment related factors were fatigue, physical changes, high demands of treatment, medication regimen, uncertainty and fear and transplant as source of hope. The only factor related to disease was the symptomless nature of kidney disease. Factors related to patient-provider relationships were patient's dependence on health care professional's skills, knowledge, and attitudes, trustful relationship, struggling with information and lack of dialogue. Finally, it is suggested the ways this study's results can be implemented in daily nursing care.
