Biodiesel is defined as fatty acid alkyl ester. The main composition of commercial biodiesel is fatty acid methyl ester. All vegetable oils, waste cooking oils, animal fats with high free fatty acids, and recycled greases were used for the biodiesel production.
In this thesis, review on methodology in biodiesel production was made. The common alkali-catalyzed transesterification as well as the acid-catalyzed esterification was discussed. Furthermore, high free fatty acid production system and non-catalyzed process were also drawn attention. An alkali-catalyzed continuous process with pre-treatment was investigated and simulated in Hysys at the final part of this thesis.
Traditional alkali-catalyzed biodiesel production was still used for industry. An acidcatalyzed pre-treatment was often used to reduce free fatty acid level. Simulation in this thesis was rather easy for the reason of author's limited ability and knowledge. However, a right result was obtained from the simulation.
