Tiivistelmä
Elderly abuse is a problem in both the general community and care facilities like nursing homes and some communities in general. Because of the ageing, global population is predicted to rise hence putting more old individuals at health and safety risks of abuse. It has been extensively studied in the general community, but less is known about the phenomenon in care facilities settings. The aim of the thesis was to provide evidence-based knowledge related to elderly abuse. The purpose was to describe healthcare workers actions with regards to elderly abuse based on earlier research and to find clerical knowledge on how to improve the situation.

The goals of the thesis were to find out 1) what triggers care workers to commit elderly abuse, 2) what are the causes and risk factors of elderly abuse in long term care facilities, 3) what are the innovative strategies that could be used to prevent and stop elderly abuse?

The thesis is based on writing of the literature review. Scholarly journals and publications with supporting data were used to compile the data and content for the thesis. The study’s methodology was qualitative for better comprehension of the subject, justifications, and effects. Inductive content analysis was used to analyse the data.

To achieving our goal, ten (10) publications from two major databases—PubMed and Ebsco-Academic search elite, and Cochrane Library —were chosen and evaluated in accordance with predetermined standards. The examination of the outcome was then conducted using a qualitative content analysis.

In conclusion, elderly abuse is a common occurrence in nursing homes, primarily because of the interaction between the resident, the staff (nurses), and the care facilities. To address this issue in care facilities, it is crucial to involve all these involved parties.
