The thesis focuses on the impacts of information technology on job design. What was studied is how long term use and new changes in information technology affects the nature of an employee's job continually. The assumption is that the use of information technology in an organization for different purposes continually affects an employee's job design, in that the way tasks are performed are becoming more technologically inclined.
The main objective of this bachelor's thesis was to show how continual changes in information technology have affected the job design in organizations. It shows how organizations in the past two decades have changed considerably particularly in the way work is performed with the use of information technology. In order to have a competitive edge in the market, there is intense use of information technology to simplify work and improve efficiency.
The thesis is divided into four different parts. The contextual part covers the changes in job design. The theoretical framework has a focus on the effects of information technology on the market. The empirical part first covers the chosen research method, research objects. The empirical part consists of a qualitative analysis based on questionnaires to four managers using IT from different departments at Laico Hotel in Nairobi. The study at Laico Hotel aims to find out what changes have occurred in the job design with reference to information technology. In the analysis the findings are given and analyzed.
The problems discussed are: What changes have occurred in the technological requirements in the job design? What are the effects of the changes on the management and work force? Effects point on work load, efficiency, feedback, flexibility, training and white collar to blue collar job-ratio. The main problem to be discussed is: How has information technology affected the requirements of a profession?
