Traditionally, in-game assets have been under the strict control of game developers, limiting ownership by players. However, NFTs have the potential to disrupt this norm, offering players verifiable, immutable ownership of in-game assets. The thesis aims to understand user perceptions and market demand for the integration of NFTs in the gaming industry. Questions related to the subject matter of this topic are examined, including the process of integration, potential benefits and drawbacks, cross-platform capability, and potentially new revenue streams. The theoretical framework of the thesis examines past, present, and future states of the subject matter. A survey was deployed to collect data, processed with quantitative methods, from audiences active in the NFT community.
The result of the thesis highlights the user perceptions, expected utilities, cross-platform interoperability views, market demand, and challenges for the integration of NFTs in the gaming industry. The survey data revealed NFT Creators and Traders highly value the utility that NFTs bring to gaming, including access to exclusive content and cross-platform capability. Respondents who had experience with blockchain-based NFT games preferred the integration of NFTs into gaming. Traders showed optimism for the longevity of NFTs in the gaming industry, while Web3 Game Developers expressed reservations about the longevity and the challenges associated with integration. The thesis advocates that stakeholders address the challenges that come with the integration of NFTs, despite the potential opportunities and benefits for web3 and gaming audiences.
