For decades, population aging has been a primary focus of health care. Together with the population aging, the growing number of dementia patients and memory disorders in older adults has increased the need for gerontological nursing. With the help of the Mini-Mental State Examination, nurses can easily detect the early signs of cognitive impairments or memory disorders to provide adequate patient care. The purpose of this thesis is to produce an educational video for the teaching of gerontological nursing at Centria University of Applied Sciences. The nursing students at Centria University of Applied Sciences were chosen as the target group as they should be able to conduct the MMSE test practically.
The objective of this thesis is to develop a trustworthy educational tool for nursing students in using MMSE to assess patient’s memory and cognitive impairments in practical clinics.
The thesis proceeded firstly with theoretical parts about dementia, gerontological nursing, and the roles of nurses in caring for patients with cognitive impairment. The content of the MMSE test would be explained clearly for an insight into the assessment of cognitive impairment in dementia patients. Further topics would relate to the project plan, project management, and risk management in producing a qualified educational video about the MMSE test. Feedback from nursing students for the education video is added at the end of the thesis.
