Wind farm owners and investors are increasingly demanding information about the environmental, social, and governance (ESG: Environmental, Social, Governance) impacts of the parks. This poses a challenge for technical and commercial wind farm operators (TCM), which focus on operating the wind farms.
This master’s thesis investigated the ESG reporting needs of wind farm owners from the perspective of TCM. The aim of the study was to identify what information TCMs need to collect and report to meet the ESG reporting requirements of owners and investors.
The study was commissioned by OX2 Technical and Commercial Management (OX2 TCM), which focuses on operating wind farms. OX2 TCM is a subsidiary of renewable energy company OX2.
Research data was collected by analyzing queries of wind farm owners by OX2 TCM in 2022. Based on the data, an overview of the most used ESG frameworks and standards was developed. The study also provides a brief overview of the European Union's ESG reporting requirements from 2023 onwards.
The findings of the study can be applied to renewable energy production in general, in addition to wind power. Tuulivoimapuistojen omistajat ja rahoittajat edellyttävät yhä enemmän tietoa puistojen ympäristövaikutuksista, sosiaalisista sitoumuksista ja hallinnosta (ESG: Environmental, Social, Governance). Tämä asettaa haasteita tuulivoimapuistojen operointiin keskittyville teknisille ja kaupallisille tuulivoimaoperaattoreille (TCM).
Tässä YAMK opinnäytetyössä selvitettiin tuulivoimapuistojen omistajien ESG raportointitarpeita TCM:n näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tunnistaa, millaista tietoa TCM:n tulee kerätä ja raportoida, jotta se voi vastata omistajien ja rahoittajien ESG-raportointivaatimuksiin.
Työn tilaaja oli uusiutuvan energian parissa toimivan OX2:n tuulipuistojen operointiin keskittyvä OX2 Technical and Commercial Management (OX2 TCM).
Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin analysoimalla vuoden 2022 aikana OX2 TCM:lle tuulivoimapuistojen omistajilta tulleita kyselyitä. Aineiston perusteella muodostettiin näkemys yleisimmin käytetyistä ESG viitekehyksistä ja standardeista. Työssä luodaan myös lyhyt katsaus Euroopan Unionin ESG raportointivaatimuksiin vuodesta 2023 eteenpäin.
Työn tuloksia voidaan soveltaa tuulivoiman ohella myös laajemmin uusiutuvan energian tuotantoon.
