This research aimed to determine exclusive breastfeeding practices and influencing factors during the first six months, after childbirth among mothers in Kokkola, Finland. Breastfeeding promotes the health of both mother and infant. The World Health Organization strongly recommends that infants be breastfed exclusively for six months. Exclusive breastfeeding is an important infant feeding practice as well as a public health issue.
The data for this quantitative descriptive study were collected with a two-part structural questionnaire. The questionnaire comprised of 34 open and closed ended questions developed on the basis of previous researches. The questionnaires were distributed public health nurses in five maternity clinics in Kokkola. The target group was 125 mothers with babies between ages 0 to 6 months. The return rate from the maternity clinics was 46.4% (n=58). Microsoft Excel programme was used in data analysis. Description statistics, i.e. averages, percentages, frequency distribution, charts and tabulation were used to describe the data.
The findings of this study revealed that out of 58 respondents, only 19% (n=11) practiced exclusive breastfeeding. Several factors were found influential to exclusive breast practice; mostly inadequate exclusive breastfeeding knowledge. The findings highlight the need for adequate prenatal education about exclusive breastfeeding and manage of its related problems.
