Zeolite is a molecular sieve of natural and synthetic nature of crystalline aluminosilicate, the basic cell structure of its framework is AlO4 and SiO4 tetrahedron. Natural zeolites also have the potentials for wastewater purification applications. Zeolite is similar or superior to activated carbon, and it has a good adsorption property for cations.
If natural zeolites are modified by surfactants, natural zeolites can also have an adsorptivity for anions and organic substance. Activated zeolites have a new cation exchange capacity and adsorption capacity or better performance on the ion exchange process. It is propitious to remove a variety of contaminants in water.
The aim of this thesis was to study the use of natural zeolites in the recovery of heavy metals, and the properties of natural zeolites. Experiment was conducted to research the adsorption capacity of analcime for Zn2+, Cr3+ and Pol·. The experimentation would attempt to compare the adsorption capacity of cations and anions by using analcime, in order to find out which was better.
The results of experiment were showed that adsorption of analcime for anion was not very successful and the adsorption efficiency was relatively slow. Because of analcime was not modified by surfactants. Analcime only had an adsorptivity for phostate. However, the structure of analcime contains alkali metal-sodium ions and also has ion exchange property. In the process of adsorption for cations, in fact, Na+ which in the analcime entered the solution, replacement of Zn2+ and Cr3+. It came up cation ionexchange reaction.
