Mahdollisten METSO-suojeluohjelmakohteiden paikantaminen ja kartoitus Joensuun kaupungin omistamilla metsäkiinteistöillä

Abstract

METSO-ohjelma on maanomistajien vapaaehtoisuuteen perustuva suojeluohjelma, jonka tavoitteena on pysäyttää metsäisten elinympäristöjen monimuotoisuuden taantuminen. METSO-ohjelma on suunnattu sekä yksityisille maanomistajille että kunnille, seurakunnille ja yhteisöille. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli löytää toimeksiantajan eli Joensuun kaupungin omistamilta metsäkiinteistöiltä METSO-ohjelmaan sopivia kohteita. Joensuun kaupunki omistaa noin 5000 ha talousmetsää. Kaupungin tavoitteena on lisätä suojeltujen alueiden pinta-alaa, joten suojeluun sopivien alueiden kartoitukselle on tarvetta.

Joensuun kaupungin metsävaratiedoista etsittiin METSO-ohjelmaan mahdollisesti sopivia kohteita ForestKIT-sovelluksen hakutoiminnon avulla. Löydetyistä alueista kymmenen vähintään neljän hehtaarin kokoista kohdetta käytiin tarkastamassa maastossa. Kohteiden metsikkökuviot luokiteltiin monimuotoisuusarvojen perusteella METSO-ohjelman luokkiin I-III. Maastotarkastusten perusteella parhaimmaksi todetulle kohteelle tehtiin tarkempi monimuotoisuusarvojen kartoitus. Kartoituksessa inventoitiin kääpä- ja sammallajit, tehtiin lahopuun kokonaismittaus ja päivitettiin puustotiedot suojelukorvauksen arvioimiseksi.

Työn tuloksena löydettiin yksi monimuotoisuudelle merkittävä kangasmetsäkohde. Kohde sopii suojeluun, koska puusto on vanhaa, lahopuuta on yli 10 m3/ha ja kääpälajeissa on vanhan metsän indikaattorilajeja. Joensuun kaupunki voi tarjota kohdetta METSO-ohjelmaan. Muista maastotarkastetuissa kohteista seitsemän oli METSO-ohjelmaan tai HELMI-elinympäristöohjelmaan sopivia. Kaksi kohdetta ei täyttänyt METSO-ohjelman luonnontilaisuuden ja monimuotoisuuden vaatimuksia.

The METSO Programme is a voluntary conservation programme for landowners. Its goal is to halt the decline in biodiversity in forest habitats. METSO is aimed at private landowners as well as municipalities, parishes and communities. The aim of the thesis was to find sites suitable for METSO from forest properties owned by the client, i.e. the City of Joensuu. The City of Joensuu owns approximately 5,000 ha of commercial forests. The city's goal is to increase the proportion of protected area, so there is a need for mapping of areas suitable for conservation.

In the first phase, potentially suitable sites for METSO were searched from the forest resource data of the City of Joensuu using the search function of the ForestKIT application. Of the areas found, ten sites were inspected in the field. According to the diversity values, the forest stands inspected were classified into categories 1-3 used in METSO. Finally, a more accurate mapping of biodiversity was carried out in one site. The survey included an inventory of polypores and mosses, a total measurement of decayed wood, and an update of tree data.

As a result of the thesis, one forest site with high biodiversity was discovered. The site is valuable for conservation because there exist old trees, more than 10 m3/ha of decayed wood and indicator species of old-growth forest. The City of Joensuu can offer the site for METSO. Other sites inspected in the field contained seven sites suitable for METSO or the HELMI Habitats Programme.
