The subject of the study was to evaluate the usage of hand hygiene in the health services of the city of Kouvola. The goal of our thesis was to collect information on the
subject and compare the results with the studies of the same kind. Another goal was to motivate nurses to wash their hands. We used systemized observation method in this study. All the information received as written out an observation handout that was planned and tested beforehand. We observed eight nurses that were included in our study randomly. Our targets was enrolled nurses, practical nurses and registered nurses. Observation was concluded at the
agreed department during a normal workday. Our study showed that there were some shortages of the use of hand hygiene before and after the patient contact. The results were similar of the results of previous studies in which the staff had a deficiency concerning hand hygiene.
