Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this research was to investigate reasons for Chinese women following traditional Chinese confinement customs after delivery known as 'Zuo Yue Zi'. The study includes mainly Chinese women who have delivered in China.
The Traditional Chinese Medicine follows traditional customs concerning recovery of whole body after delivery. This research helps people to understand the Chinese culture and customs of women after delivery. The questionnaire included closed questions and open-ended questions and it was distributed to mothers and hospital staff. Questionnaires were taken to China. The data were collected from mothers (N=40) and doctors as well as midwives (n=1O) in China. The data were analyzed in Finland.
Results indicated that almost all Chinese mothers had followed traditional customs or wished to follow traditional Chinese confinement customs whether they are in China or abroad. Most of the mothers followed customs strictly such as customary food and restriction of activities. The health workers answered the questions in the second questionnaire. It could be important for nmses in Finland and other countries to know about Chinese mothers' traditional customs after delivery.
