The transit traffic through Finland has grown rapidly together with the increase of the total Russian imports. The transit traffic through Finland started officially in 1970's. The year 2008 was record breaking by the transit traffic transportations through Finland in volume of 8.4 million tons of cargo.
The port of Kokkola is one of the main transit traffic ports in Finland. The port operator Oy M. Rauanheimo Ab is taking care of the transit traffic transportations and there are long traditions in doing business with Russians. During recent years the transit traffic transportations through the port of Kokko la have increased notably because of the transportations of iron ore pellets from Kostamuksha.
The aim of this research was to report the current situation, trends and future forecasts of the Russia transit traffic through Finland. Deeper concentration was focused on bulk cargo and on the transportations through the port ofKokkola. The assignment giver of this research is port operator Oy M. Rauanheimo Ab. The methodologies used in the research were questionnaire and desk research on the information about transit traffic. It was found out by using available literature, publications, web-pages, experiences and interviews from the field.
Finland has reached a leading position as a transit traffic country because of good connections, reliability, safety, high and modem infrastructure and ability to compete as a transit traffic route. Tl route through the port of Kokkola is also sustainable and competitive even according to Russia's o, ports, because of the long experience and gained expertise, the investments that do increase the productivity and competiveness, the optimal pricing system and the services.
