Tl1e aim of the thesis was to find out types of sexual education knowledge that the 8th graders would prefer to have during their sexual education lectures which would assist them in prevention of teenage pregnancies as well as sexually transmitted diseases. Moreover, methods of pregnancies prevention as well as from whom they wanted to obtain this knowledge were also investigated in this study. Sexual education topics of sexual rights, sex and sexuality, teenage pregnancies and their complications and preventions as well as sexually transmitted diseases were discussed in this study.
Questionnaires were a source of data collection. The questionnaires included with both multiple choice questions and open ended questions. The data were collected in November 2009 and the target group was 8th graders of Kiviniitty school in Kokkola. The participants consisted of only one class that was chosen randomly and it was comprised of eighteen girls and nine boys (N=27). The response rate was 100% and the results were analysed by both Microsoft Excel and manual means.
Teenage pregnancies and abortions, sex and sexuality and sexually transmitted diseases were highly chosen as the sexual education topics that the participants preferred to have more in formation. The condom was the most commonly used contraceptive method by both boys and girls followed by the contraceptive pill meanwhile, the school public health nurse and internet were the most preferred sources of information. However, the overall study revealed that sexual knowledge was satisfactory.
